Dreaming of a White Christmas
Daily Musings | Thursday 18 December 2008 by Richard BlayneyMake no mistake about it Toronto is in for a proper White Christmas. The snow I talked about earlier in the month went away pretty quickly but a few nights ago it came down hard again leaving more than ever for this winter. The main roads had been ploughed but the footpaths were a good 8-10cm deep with snow. Of course hardened Canadians were quick to inform me this was nothing but the weather man was also quick to inform me that in the coming days Canada is expecting a proper winter storm that will dump between 15 and 20cms of snow each go.
I don’t dislike the snow generally but when you are going to and from work and especially via foot and bus it can become a little bit of a pain in the ass. Saying that, if Northern Ireland got the snowfall we got a few days ago the country would have ground to a halt. Here though there are as many ploughs as cars on the road and most privateĀ car parksĀ even hire private ploughs to sweep the snow there.
Anyway, tomorrow should be pretty interesting. I have never seen a snow fall much worse than the one a few days ago but if it keeps up with another load on Sunday it will be a little crazy. I’m not sure even the hardened Canadians would be used to that much snow.
I have seen equal amounts to the snow we’ve had to date, over the years back home. I remember a Christmas morning somewhere in the mid 90s when we got the one and only White Christmas I have experience in Northern Ireland. Then there was an Easter. yes an Easter (I think 1997), when it came down good. I was meant to go play my first ever round of Golf on a full sized course but that was quickly cancelled for a round of snowball fights. 11 years on and I still haven’t played that round of Golf on the full sized course.
You know I am convinced I was a Tiger Woods in the making but a bizarre fall of snow in late March put pay to me being able to display my talents!
Back on topic, I’ll be sure to post some photos if and when this huge downpour of snow arrives. Here is hoping I’m home from work before the worst of it.
