Shock Horror: I could actually come to like the England Team!

Now that I am no longer living in the cauldron of T.V - slash - Radio - slash - Tabloid Journalism - slash - Media over-hype that is the British footballing world I actually don’t mind the England football team. Now-a-days all I get are the goal highlights, and of late with England racking up the goals I only get a selection of the best in a 30 second clip. You know, I can live with that right now — it is as much England as a non-Englishman needs and it actually allows you to like the team for the players and not hate them for everything that surrounds them.

We always laugh at the American’s and their ‘We are the World’ attitude but only when you go away do you realise that the national media that covers Great Britain is the same with England in footballing terms; They are the one and only, the centre of the footballing world and to bad if you don’t like it. Well, out here they are a 30-second highlight reel at the back end of sports centre on 24-sports channels only and again - I like them better for it.

Now you can see the team that plays, you can see the goals, you read the odd mini-report of the game itself in the papers and you can avoid the sideshow that comes with their national team. Over here people haven’t even heard of the term WAG never mind having to read about it every time the England team get together for a match.

You do not lose out either. There is no coverage of Northern Ireland and their shaky start to qualifying, but then there was little coverage of that in the British tabloids anyway.

It is all win-win.

And so for the first time in perhaps ever I was pleased to see England grab a few wins and almost confirm their place in South Africa 2010 already. You know I could almost bare to see them win a World Cup now. The focus would be on the players here, I’d be happy for Stevie G and I wouldn’t have to face the torment that the rest of the nations of Great Britain would have to face from the national British English media.
